2020 – The Million Dollar Year! Wow!!! What a Ride it has been!
Wheelin’ Warriors of the North is a team I founded mid November of 2012 when I registered as the Team Captain. 2013 was my first time participating in this life changing event! I had wanted to register for the Ride to Conquer Cancer for quite some time. However, I was waiting until I had finished school and had graduated from the nursing program. I graduated August 31, 2012 and have been working as an LPN since October 1, 2012.
Newly graduated and now working in health care it was time to realize my dream, to not only ride the 200+ km to battle cancer, but to do it as a team. The ride was the perfect marriage of my previous career of 25+ years in the Health & Fitness Industry, and my new career in the Health Care Industry. Wheelin’ Warriors of the North and the training we were about to embark on allowed me to bring my passion for health, wellness and the preventative side of medicine together all for a great cause. Win Win!
This was a personal challenge and a cause I felt strongly about for another reason, the biggest reason and the catalyst for building an army of cancer fighting cyclists, was the passing of my long time friend, Nola. Each year I ride in honor of Nola. Nola fought cancer with grace, dignity and style. She had a sparkle, an amazing sense of humor and an ability to make those around her feel good. She was natural at making and retaining friendships and reminding everyone what really matters in life. She truly made a difference.
Sadly, Nola died in June of 2012 from skin cancer, just 4 days before her 48th birthday. It seemed I was destined to participate in the Ride, as the 2 day journey in 2013 (my first year), was on the weekend of June 16th, which was also her birthday. Shortly after Nola’s death, I purchased a road bike. Her name is June! June and I had a rough start but we get along great now! (can you say clip-on peddles!) Although, I had always been an active individual and a long time fitness instuctor, cycling was completely new to me, needless to say I have absolutely fallen in love with cycling and the joy that riding with a community of like minded individuals brings with it. I just can’t imagine my life without June and my amazing team!
One morning in mid November 2012 the name of our team came to me in a dream. That afternoon, I called the Ride office and registered myself as the Team Captain of Wheelin’ Warriors of the North and began the recruitment process. Each year our team has consisted of some very inspiring and dedicated teammates ranging in age and experience, but all share a common goal: a passion for fundraising in support of cancer research! Most of the participants are from Northern BC however, we have teammates from all over the province, even a few from AB. In order to participate in the ride, each registrant is committed to raising a minimum of $2500 individually. To date all 8 teams, with the support of family, friends and the community have raised over $1 MILLION to conquer cancer. WOW!!! Every year, the team is made up some very amazing individuals with a strong desire to make our team a success! Outstanding people doing a phenomanol thing. I want to thank everyone of my team mates over the past 7 years for helping me do one of the best things I’ve ever done. Thanks for joining me on this journey.
My involvement with BC Cancer Foundation has allowed me to see the incredible impact that philanthropy has in supporting vital enhancement to care and advancement in cancer research at BC Cancer. I know the challenges that so many people have when facing a cancer diagnosis and as a resident of Prince George I am proud that we are home to a BC Cancer Centre who is a leader in radiation therapy.
2020 will be my 8th ride as Captain of Wheelin’ Warriors of the North and once again I ride to celebrate the great ones that have been taken from us too soon with hope that Wheelin’ Warriors of the North’s fund raising efforts will make a difference for those affected by cancer. I urge you to consider making a donation to myself or one of my team mates and in turn you would be helping the BC Cancer Foundation establish a best-in-class Precision Radiation Treatment and Research Program at BC Cancer – Prince George. This will directly lead to more patients being treated in Prince George and better survival rates for so many of our loved ones who have been or will be impacted by this disease.
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration! Together, let’s keep fighting cancer!
